【For Those Applying for a Deduction for Dependents with Regard to Non-resident Relatives】

If you have dependent relatives outside of Japan and are sending a considerable amount of money for living expenses or educational expenses to them, you will be eligible for deduction for dependents and you will be able to obtain tax savings by reporting to your place of employment, city hall, or tax office.

The documents required for the declaration are “Documents concerning relatives” and “Documents concerning remittances”. If these documents are written in a foreign language, translation is required.

《Starting January 1st, 2023, tax laws have changed.》
Relatives living abroad who are 30 to 69 are not eligible for deduction for dependents.

However, dependent relatives living abroad who are 30 to 69, who study abroad, who are persons with disabilities, or who receive remittances of 380,000 yen or more for living or educational expenses from the tax return filers are still eligible for deduction for dependents.

※When sending money to a family member in a foreign country, please keep track of how much money you sent and to whom.
・Dependent relatives cannot be applied if the money is hand-delivered cash.
・If multiple relatives living outside the country are eligible for deduction for dependents, documents are required to clarify that remittances have been made for each relative.
